Diocese to close Pittsfield school

By Portland Press Herald Staff Report January 29, 2008 10:17 AM

St. Agnes School in Pittsfield will close this June at the end of the school year.

Attendance at the Catholic school has fluctuated since 2002, when it reached its capacity with 71 children. Today 44 students are enrolled in pre-kindergarten through eighth-grade classes, according to a statement released Tuesday by the diocese.

"This decision has been a very difficult one and this step has been taken only after much prayer," Bishop Richard Malone said. "At the same time I recognize the continued dedication, commitment and support of parents, faculty and parishioners. It is through their efforts that St. Agnes students have been provided with a good educational program and effective faith formation."

The school's enrollment decline has limited school income from tuition. The diocese said the school now owes it $52,000 and another $77,500 has been approved to cover costs through the end of this year.

St. Agnes opened in 1993.
