Eight sea turtles arrived at the University of New England's Marine Animal Rehabilitation Center last Friday, where they will stay for the next four to six months, recovering from hypothermia, dehydration and - in some cases - pneumonia.
The turtles were all rescued after washing ashore on Cape Cod beaches in late November and early December.
The rehabilitation center is now treating seven Kemp's Ridley sea turtles and one Green sea turtle. The turtles migrate south to warmer waters in the winter, but some fail to make it out of the Cape Cod Bay before the waters cool. Turtles become cold-stunned and float to the surface, where they sometimes wash ashore.
Hunting, fishing, development and pollution have all reduced sea turtle populations, and both Kemp's Ridley and Green sea turtles are on the endangered species list, according to UNE's rehabilitation center.
