Stage Neck Inn fires were arson

By Portland Press Herald Staff Report January 31, 2008 12:59 PM

The State Fire Marshal's Office today said arson was the cause of two fires in the last two weeks at the 58-room Stage Neck Inn in York.

The latest fire broke out last night at about 7 and heavily damaged guest rooms, according to Sgt. Timothy York with the Fire Marshal's Office. About 100 firefighters from York and surrounding towns battled the blaze, which was extinguished by 10 p.m.

No details about the cause of the fire were available because it is an ongoing criminal investigation, according to York.

The Stage Neck Inn, which sits on a peninsula, was closed after a fire on Jan. 17, which officials said today was an arson fire. That fire started in a shed and spread to an adjacent banquet and meeting hall. Damages were estimated at $400,000.

Last year, a fire Feb. 3 in the laundry room of the inn caused $50,000 in damage. At the time, officials said it was not considered a suspicious fire.
