A new law permits 17-year-olds to take part for the first time in the Republican and Democratic caucuses this month.
Sponsored by Speaker of the House Glenn Cummings, D-Portland, the law allows 17-year-olds to become registered voters in a political party and participate in the primary as long as they turn 18 by the general election on Nov. 4. Only seven other states have similar laws.
They may register with their municipal clerk or at the caucuses. Republicans caucus today, Saturday and Sunday. Democrats caucus Feb. 10.
They should have identification that provides their street address, such as a driver’s license, or a piece of mail.
Caucus locations and times are available at the party websites at www.mainedems.org and www.mainegop.com.
