Former legislator running for state Senate

By Portland Press Herald Staff Report February 06, 2008 02:55 PM

Edward Kelleher, a longtime member of the Maine House of Representatives, announced today that he is running for a state Senate seat.

Kelleher, who is 66, served in the House from 1968 to 1984 as a Democrat. He retired last month after a 21-year career as the Public Information Officer for the Maine Judicial Branch.

“I think I’ve got something to offer - experience,” he said. “I’m known as a straight shooter and a hard-working fellow.”

Kelleher, of Scarborough, is running for Senate District 7, a seat currently held by Sen. Lynn Bromley (D-South Portland) who will be termed out. The district represents South Portland, Cape Elizabeth and part of Scarborough.

Kelleher said he would focus on education, the environment and taxes as his top priorities.

During his time in the capitol, the Bangor native was a member of the Appropriations Committee and was the House chair of the Utilities Committee.
