THE WEATHER AND TRAFFIC

cold:windy.gif At 8:45 a.m. it was 10 degrees and windy in downtown Portland.

A wicked strong wind that blew throughout the night and knocked out power to about 6,200 Central Maine Power customers (most of which has been restored) continues to blow today. Its bite will make the below-freezing temperatures feel very much below zero. The National Weather Service in Gray posted a wind advisory for today, saying gusts could be up to 50 mph.

On the bright side: Sunny.

FOR MARINERS:

Gale warning in effect for Casco Bay, in case you couldn't guess. Wind blowing at 20 to 25 knots, with gusts up to 40 knots. Seas cresting at 7 feet.

Low tides at 7:39 a.m. and then again at 7:58 p.m. High tide in Portland expected around 1:50 p.m.

FOR TRAVELERS:

• Route 108 through Canton was closed by Maine State Police just before 8 a.m., due to drifting snow that has piled up on the road, causing numerous slide-offs. Canton is in Oxford County and west of Livermore Falls. Police dispatchers said the area will be closed until the road can be cleaned up. This route is one of the main arteries for traveling between Turner and Rumford.

THE NEWEST NEWS:

THE WOMAN INJURED IN A SANFORD CAR ACCIDENT LAST WEEK IS NOT DEAD.

A miscommunication between the Sanford Police Department and Maine State Police department meant the press got some incorrect information regarding the condition of Geraldine Westgate, 68, of Sanford, who was involved in a two-car crash on Feb. 5.

A weekly round-up of law enforcement ongoings around the state, put out by the Maine State Police on Friday, stated that "Sanford police report a woman has died following a two vehicle crash in that town early Tuesday morning. The crash took place on the New Dam Road."

Actually, said Lt. Gordon Littlefield of the Sanford Police Department, Ms. Westgate is doing just fine and recovering from surgery at Maine Medical Center. She was injured in the accident, but not fatally.

"She is certainly not dead," said Littlefield.

He said he believes the mistake happened like this: The initial report made after the messy, two-car crash listed Westgate as a fatality. That report was sent out to the Maine State Police before it could be corrected. It was a situation where passed-on information should have been confirmed by another source, but was instead taken at face value.

"It was definitely a case of miscommunication," he said.

POLICE ARE APPEALING TO THE PUBLIC TO HELP FIND A FORT KENT MAN who went missing two weeks ago.

The Aroostook County Sheriff's Department said Lance Bossie was last seen driving his maroon Ford F-350 pickup truck down a Fort Kent street about 6:30 a.m. on Jan. 26. He was reported missing the next day when he didn't show up for his job with TNT Road Co.
Police say nobody's heard from Bossie and that he hasn't used his credit or debit cards since he was last seen.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Aroostook County Sheriff's Department at 800-432-7842.

A PLANE EN ROUTE TO BANGOR carrying soldiers returning home from Iraq, was forced to land at Pease Air Force Base in New Hampshire due to high winds.

The 300 soldiers were returning from a tour in Iraq but were expected to stop in Bangor to refuel. Their final destination is Camp Pendleton, Calif.

But winds changed their plans, the AP reports, after causing problems with the plane's air flaps.

Nobody was hurt in the precautionary landing that happened at 3 a.m.

GOOD NEWS FOR RV LOVERS IN MAINE. Gov. John Baldacci today is expected to sign a proclamation naming March 29 – April 5, 2008 as Discover RVing Week in Maine. Don't know exactly what it means, or why it's important to give recreational vehicles a whole week of recognition in Maine, but Gov. Baldacci will probably make all of that clear during the 3 p.m. ceremony.
