The University of Southern Maine has put 26 academic programs on notice that they may be discontinued as the university struggles with four years of budget deficits.
The 26 programs, including Women & Gender Studies, Arts & Humanities, Physics and Radiation Therapy, were identified for possible suspension based on low enrollment and graduate rates. The 26 programs last year produced 65 graduates. The possible cuts were announced late Friday afternoon to faculty and student government leaders.
The programs have been asked to come up with plans to boost their enrollment and graduate rates. No tenured faculty are expected to lose their jobs if programs are cut and students already enrolled in any suspended program will not be affected, said Joseph Wood, interim president.
