Winterport man killed in crash on bridge

By Portland Press Herald Staff Report February 12, 2008 11:39 AM

A Winterport man was killed late Monday in a two-vehicle crash on the Route 1 Verona-Bucksport bridge.

State police troopers said 52-year-old Thomas Johnson was thrown from his 1996 Dodge Stratus and killed instantly when the vehicle crashed head on into a pickup truck with a snow plow mounted on it. The collision took place in the middle of the bridge about 11:30 p.m.

The driver of the truck, 28-year-old Lance Sanborn of Verona Island, was flown by helicopter to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, where he is being treated for compound leg fractures. Sanborn is a firefighter-paramedic with the Bucksport Fire Department and he is also a Bucksport reserve police officer. He was off duty at the time of the crash.

Troopers say they are still investigating why Johnson's car crossed the center line and collided with the truck. The crash was investigated by a team of five state troopers assisted by members of the Bucksport police and fire departments.
