Report raises red flag about income

By Kennebec Journal Staff report February 26, 2008 12:55 PM

AUGUSTA — A report released today that measures the state’s economic health raises red flags about per capita personal income, health care costs, taxes and electricity costs, while praising the state in other areas.

The Maine Economic Growth Council, a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization, found that Maine ranks 39th in per capita personal income with an average of $31,931.

The report also identified state and local tax burden as another problem area, with Maine still ranking in the top five states in the country. It also notes that “Maine has not made significant movement” in the last decade toward reaching the goal of moving toward the New England average in tax burden.

In the good news department, the council gave the state high marks for new business starts, health insurance coverage, conservation lands and sustainable forest lands.
