Lobster boat told to tie up for lack of safety gear

By David Hench Portland Press Herald Staff Writer February 27, 2008 10:10 AM

PORTLAND — A Portland lobster boat has been ordered to stay tied up until it is outfitted with adequate safety equipment, the Coast Guard says.

The Coast Guard ordered an end to the 38-foot Ninatoria II’s fishing trip Tuesday.

The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Hammerhead boarded the boat five miles southeast of Portland at 1 p.m. and found it had no life raft or fire extinguishers as well as several other lesser violations.

The boat and its three-man crew were escorted back to Portland and the boat’s owner and master, Steve L. Grant of North Yarmouth, was instructed to stay in port until the Coast Guard confirms the boat has the required safety gear.

Coast Guard officials said traveling without such important safety equipment is extremely risky, especially during the winter. A Coast Guard review panel will determine whether to take any further action against Grant.
