A 22-year old is in Cumberland County Jail after being arrested in connection with a Portland bank robbery just before noon.

Police have charged Hamdi Naji, 22, whose last known address was Lewiston, with robbery.

Police say a man entered Key Bank at 400 Forest Avenue at 11:40 a.m. and told the tellers he had a weapon. The robber jumped over the counter and grabbed a substantial amount of cash, then ran, police said.

A witness who saw the robbery unfolding called police even before the bank did and provided a description of the suspect. Officers patrolling the area arrested Naji at Deering Avenue and Pitt Street within three to four minutes. Police said they recovered the money.

Naji was taken to Mercy Hospital for treatment of burns to his hand that police said were caused by the exploding dye pack that was with the money.
