Straw poll set on new Falmouth school site

By Tess Nacelewicz Portland Press Herald Staff Writer March 04, 2008 11:09 AM

Falmouth residents are being asked to participate tomorrow in a straw poll on whether they support building the planned new elementary school on the Woodville Road campus where the middle school and high school are located.

The public forum and straw poll vote will begin at 7 p.m. in the music room at Falmouth High School at 52 Woodville Road.

The Elementary School Construction Committee has been working on the plan to build a new pre-kindergarten through grade 5 school for a year. Falmouth expects to receive about $35 million in state funding for the new school, which would be built to replace the overcrowded Lunt and Plummer-Motz elementary schools, located next to each other on Middle and Lunt roads.

At a meeting on Feb. 12, the committee endorsed the campus of the middle school and high school as the preferred site for the new school from both financial and educational perspectives.

A vote tomorrow night in favor of the committee’s recommendation will allow the recommendation to go to the State Board of Education for review and a decision, according to the construction committee. Design of the building also could begin, as well as planning for improvements to the campus.

If the site recommendation is not approved, the project would be delayed and state construction funds jeopardized, the committee says. The group says that no other suitable sites have been identified in a search process over the past year.
