Panel may extend superintendent's stay

By Portland Press Herald Staff Report March 07, 2008 11:26 AM

The Portland School Committee will hold an executive session Wednesday to consider asking Interim Superintendent Jeanne Whynot-Vickers to serve an additional year in the temporary position.

The committee will discuss whether to authorize Chairman John Coyne to negotiate a contract extension with Whynot-Vickers, a former assistant superintendent who took over the district's top spot in September.

The closed-door meeting will take place at 7 p.m. in Room 250 at Portland Arts and Technology High School off Allen Avenue.

The committee will hold a brief business meeting at 7:15 p.m. to vote publicly on the authorization question.

The committee appointed Whynot-Vickers to replace Mary Jo O'Connor, who resigned at the end of August amid a $2 million budget crisis.

The committee recently started planning its search for a permanent replacement, who would start in the summer of 2009.

Whynot-Vickers assumed O'Connor's duties and $112,000 annual salary. Her contract runs through June 2008.

She has said she's willing to serve as interim superintendent through June 2009 but doesn't want the job permanently.
