The Brunswick Naval Air Station is planning to hold a memorial service Friday for the petty officer who was killed Monday when a bread delivery truck hit him on Interstate 295 in Bowdoinham.
Chief Petty Officer Luis Luque said 30-year-old Christopher Strom was working as an aviation mechanic at the Navy base, but was living with his girlfriend in the central Maine town of Pittsfield.
Luque said Strom was assigned to Brunswick in July 2006. He was scheduled to be reassigned to Bahrain, a Persian Gulf nation that borders Saudi Arabia, in July 2008.
Luque did not know exactly when Strom learned about his permanent change of station, but said sailors usually receive notice several months in advance of being shipped overseas.
The memorial service will be held at the air station chapel at 9 a.m. on Friday.
State police said witnesses told them Strom was standing in the northbound lane of Interstate 295 with his hands held above his head when a truck operated by Kevin Yarboro of Attleboro, Mass. struck him.
State police said Strom had called his girlfriend about 15 minutes before the crash to say he was on his way home. Yarboro will not be charged.
Investigators are trying to determine if Strom, who was from Washington state, had left any notes behind.
