Only 26 hours after registration opened for the 2008 TD Banknorth Beach to Beacon 10K Road Race, the window closed. The field of 5,500 is full.
For the 11th edition of the annual road race, scheduled for Aug. 2 at 8 a.m., organizers discontinued printed applications. They made a big effort to let runners know about online registration, sent postcards and e-mails and notified newspapers and television stations.
"We had 2,000 people registered in the first hour," said race president Dave Weatherbie. "That was incredible. I thought the Web site held up pretty well."
Weatherbie said 170 spots remain open for the Kids Fun Run, but registration won't resume until packet pickup, scheduled for July 31 at 4 p.m.
"Although we only have 550 T-shirts, we don't turn away any kid who wants to run," he said. "We've always accommodated that and will continue to accommodate that."
