LEWISTON - Authorities say a 22-year-old Lewiston man has been charged with murder in the strangulation death of his mother.

The Department of Public Safety says Matthew Audet was arrested Monday after being questioned by detectives at the Lewiston Police Department.

Audet called 911 late Sunday to report that his mother, 47-year-old Debra Audet, had stopped breathing. She was pronounced dead at Central Maine Medical Center.

Matthew and Debra Audet shared an apartment on Birch Street in the downtown area.

Police had earlier labeled the death suspicious but awaited an autopsy that determined that the woman was strangled and the death was a homicide.

The suspect is being held without bail pending an appearance Tuesday in Androscoggin County Superior Court.
