Approximately 470 Augusta-area households lost power Friday as power lines in the path of howling winds struggled to remain upright.

In Brunswick, an uprooted tree leveled wires, dimming the lights in more than 4,000 households. Central Maine Power Co. had restored power to about 3,000 of those homes by Friday evening. Of the more than 1,200 Alfred-area households that lost electricity Friday, power had been restored to about 1,000 Friday night.

Central Maine Power Co. spokesman John Carroll said in a statement Friday afternoon that he expected the company to restore power across the company’s service area by Friday evening.

The National Weather Service predicts winds will continue, while gradually subsiding, until Sunday night.
