AUGUSTA — Those who want a look at traditional methods for tapping maple trees for their syrup can stop in at Old Fort Western between 1 and 3 p.m. today.
The site, on the banks of the Kennebec River in Augusta, is a 1754 National Historical Landmark fort, store and house museum.
Staff will tap trees, whittle spiles, collect sap and boil it over flames in the 18th century manner.
Hearth-baked corn bread with maple syrup will be available in the south kitchen. House tours will be offered.
Maple Syrup Day at the fort is part of Maine Maple Sunday.
