WESTBROOK - A Westbrook City Council panel on Monday declined to initiate a zoning change that would prevent Pike Industries from expanding its Spring Street operations.
Pike’s plans became a concern to Idexx Laboratories, a biotechnology company that has expansion plans in nearby Five Star Industrial Park.
The city administration proposed creating a new light industrial manufacturing zone that would include the park, nearby Westbrook Heights Business Park and adjacent industrial areas. Pike’s mining at the site would be grandfathered, but the company would not be able pursue other parts of its plan, like the addition of an asphalt plant.
The city council’s Committee of the Whole took no action on the rezoning proposal. Instead, the two companies were urged to try to work out their differences, said City Council President Brendan Rielly.
