Bill growing for Cape vandalism

By Portland Press Herald Staff Report March 25, 2008 01:10 PM

Cape Elizabeth Superintendent Alan Hawkins said the bill to fix the damage caused by student vandals at the high school Monday is starting to mount.

Just replacing the 500 ceiling tiles torn down from the library will cost between $4,000 and $5,000, he said.

The 10 students who confessed to the incident, calling it a prank, also used markers to draw sexual and drug-related pictures on classroom walls, smeared peanut butter on door knobs and sink handles, propped desks against classroom doors and broke some desks, Hawkins said.

“They put the desks in the bathroom stalls and slammed the doors on them, then locked the stalls from the inside,” Hawkins said.

More costs will come from having to reschedule classes for Saturday morning. Hawkins said he needs to order buses and find substitute teachers.

The students were suspended after they turned themselves in Monday morning. Hawkins said that he is talking to legal counsel today to decide whether to expel them.
