The voluntary inspection of wiring on hundreds of large commercial jets should not affect Portland Jetport directly, but could leave some travelers stuck in other cities.
American Airlines announced Wednesday that it needed to reinspect the way bundles of wires were attached to the MD-80 aircraft after increased auditing of maintenance records by the Federal Aviation Administration. The airline canceled about 200 flights so the inspections, which take several hours, could occur.
American does not fly out of the Portland Jetport but Delta, which does, announced its own proactive re-inspection of 117 MD-88s today. The inspections resulted in 275 cancellations through early Friday, about 3 percent of the airline's flights.
Delta MD-88s do not fly through the Jetport currently but Delta travelers could find their connecting flights have been delayed, an airport spokesman said. The airline expected its flight schedule to return to normal by Friday morning.
Travelers should check the status of their flights before leaving and contact the airlines with any concerns.
