By Kennebec Journal Staff report March 27, 2008 04:20 PM

AUGUSTA — The U.S. Internal Revenue Service will open its four offices in Maine for special Saturday hours to help people eligible for federal economic stimulus payments but who normally may not fill out an income-tax return.

IRS spokeswoman Peggy Riley said IRS offices in Augusta, Lewiston, Bangor and South Portland will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday to help those eligible to fill out the simplified 1040A forms necessary to claim their payments as part of a nationwide program. Checks are scheduled to be sent out starting in May, she said.

"Millions of Americans who do not pay federal income taxes may be eligible for a $300 payment, $600 for married couples, if they have at least $3,000 in qualifying income," Riley explained.

"Qualifying income is defined as any combination of earned income such as wages, nontaxable combat pay and certain benefits from Social Security, Veterans Affairs and Railroad Retirement. Many households also will be eligible for an additional $300 for each qualifying child younger than 17," Riley continued.

The IRS office in Augusta is located at 68 Sewall St. Assistance with the application process is also available during regular business hours and a number of volunteer programs are offering assistance in other locations as well.
