Bishop will dedicate new Calais church

By The Associated Press wire report March 28, 2008 09:47 AM

CALAIS - Bishop Richard Malone of Maine's Catholic Diocese will be joined by Protestant and Jewish representatives when he dedicates a new church in Calais to replace one that burned down after a lightning strike in 2005.

The new Immaculate Conception Church will be dedicated with a Mass on Monday led by 15 priests.

It will be the first time a new church will be dedicated in the Portland Diocese since 1999, when Holy Trinity Parish in Lisbon was dedicated.

Construction of the new Immaculate Conception church began last summer. Since then, Masses have been held at the First Congregational Church in Calais.
