Department of Education officials said they expect some school districts to file their final plans for consolidating with other districts by the end of the day.
Although some school districts have put their consolidation plans on hold while the Legislature debates revisions to the consolidation law, others are expected to meet today’s deadline for filing final plans, said Jaci Holmes, a department spokeswoman. Only two final reorganization plans have been approved by the department to date.
The department will not know until Monday exactly how many districts are still on course to consolidate under a law designed to merge the state’s 290 school districts into 80 with the goal of saving administrative costs. Districts have until July 1, 2009 to consolidate.
