The Legislature today will kill a bill that would allow the city to lease submerged state-owned land under the Maine State Pier for up to 75 years, according to House Speaker Glenn Cummings, D-Portland
Cummings, the bill’s sponsor, said the Legislature’s Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry Committee will kill the bill with a unanimous vote when it meets this afternoon. Cummings said the bill lacks support from both Republican and Democrats on the committee.
The Olympia Cos., which plans to develop the pier, needs the long-term lease to gain financing for the $100 million project. The company had planned to build a hotel and other amenities on the pier as well as an office building and park on land adjacent to the pier.
