AUGUSTA — While flooding does not appear to be imminent, a stubborn snowpack that has not melted substantially after more than a week of spring is a cause for concern, observers say.
“Our flood potential is increasing every day because our snowpack isn’t decreasing,” said Greg Stewart, data section chief at the U.S. Geological Survey in Augusta.
The coming week, however, could cause some melting as temperatures move up into the 40s tomorrow and into the 50s by Tuesday, National Weather Service hydrologist Tom Hawley said.
While days will generally be warmer, the mercury is likely to drop below freezing at night this weekend and early next week.
“That’s very helpful for getting rid of the snow,” Hawley said. “You’re going to get melting during the day and it will freeze up at night.”
