Supper benefits new learning center

By Portland Press Herald Staff Report March 28, 2008 03:34 PM

A public supper to benefit the planned new Regional Learning Center at Tidewater Farm in Falmouth will take place tomorrow at Riverton Community School, 1600 Forest Ave. in Portland.

A $2 million fundraising drive is under way for the education and research center, which will be located at the former Tidewater Farm off Route 1 in Falmouth. The center will be the new home of the University of Maine Cooperative Extension in Cumberland County and will be a place to learn about sustainable, organic agriculture. It is expected to open in early 2009.

The event is 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and will feature pulled pork or barbecue beef sandwiches, side dishes and homemade pies; a 50-50 raffle; a silent auction of handmade baskets and a bottle drive. The cost is $10 for adults; $7 for senior citizens; and $5 for children 5-13. There is no charge for children younger than 5.

The University of Maine Cooperative Extension is one of the sponsors of the event. The extension’s activities include advising farmers about crops, running a master gardeners’ program, helping home gardeners test their soil, and teaching young people about agriculture and positive values through 4-H programs.
