Cape students spend Saturday morning in school

By Portland Press Herald Staff Report March 29, 2008 02:33 PM

Students and teachers at Cape Elizabeth High School spent a rare Saturday in school this morning.

School was in session from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. to make up for missed classes on Monday, when the school shut down following acts of vandalism committed by 10 seniors at the school early Monday morning.

Seniors at the school made breakfast for the teachers prior to class this morning, as a way to apologize for the acts of their 10 classmates and say 'thank you' for coming in on Saturday. Almost the entire senior class signed an apology card, which was presented to the teachers.

"It basically said 'Thanks for being here and putting up with us,' " said Amanda Hatt, a senior.

Damage included tiles torn from the library ceiling and broken bathroom stall doors. Earlier this week, school officials estimated the cost of the damage could exceed $10,000.

Cape Elizabeth Police Chief Neil Williams said earlier this week that he would meet with the Cumberland County district attorney next week to discuss possible criminal charges against the 10 students.
