Oxford house heavily damaged in fire

OXFORD — A 2 1/2-story house in Oxford was heavily damaged Friday night in what firefighters believe was an electrical fire.

Firefighters responded about 8 p.m. to a home owned by Arthur Duchemin and Carol Byram at 13 Allen Hill Road, said Oxford Fire Chief Scott Hunter. The two had moved into the house in early March, he said.

The fire started in the kitchen and spread to the second floor and the attic. Firefighters took about 90 minutes to contain the blaze but were on scene until close to midnight, Hunter said.

Duchemin reported hearing a loud “pop” from the kitchen just prior to seeing smoke and flames, Hunter said. Both he and Byram escaped without injury.

The kitchen and dining area and parts of the second floor were gutted by the fire, Hunter said. The state Fire Marshal’s Office will try to determine an official cause early next week.
