UPDATE: Man charged in robbery heist

By David Hench Portland Press Herald Staff Writer March 31, 2008 02:50 PM

Portland police have arrested the person they say stole prescription narcotics from the Old Port Pharmacy this morning.

Just before 2 p.m., police charged Patrick Morency, 24, of Portland with robbery and possession of prescription narcotics.

Police say Morency went into the pharmacy at 195 Middle St. and threatened the pharmacist with an edged weapon, demanding that he unlock cabinets containing narcotics. The man made off with many bottles of narcotics, but police recovered most of them, said Lt. Anthony Ward, head of detectives for the department.

The man was wearing a Tyvek disposable jumpsuit during the 8 a.m. robbery and residents spotted him driving a small silver hatchback down Exchange Street. Police used the description of the car to identify potential suspects and brought Morency to the station for questioning.

He was then charged and taken to Cumberland County Jail where he is being held pending his bail being set.
