WESTBROOK - A former Roman Catholic church on Main Street may be demolished to make room for a parking lot.
The St. Mary’s church building is now owned by Legacy Publishing. The business is asking the city for permission to demolish the building to create a parking area with screening between the lot and Riverbank Park.
City staff and the Village Review Overlay Committee support the request. The proposal goes before the planning board Tuesday.
St. Mary’s proved a difficult space to reuse because of a number of issues, including a recurring leak and poor sound quality, according to a memo from City Planner Molly Just.
The church building was sold because of the merger of three parishes – St. Hyacinth’s on Brown Street, St. Mary’s on Main Street and St. Edmund’s on Bridgton Road.
The consolidated parish, called St. Anthony of Padua, uses St. Hyacinth’s. The First Evangelical Free Church of Maine is now housed in the former St. Edmund’s building.
