YORK - The Maine Turnpike Authority will hold a public meeting tonight on four possible sites for a new York toll plaza.
The meeting at York Middle School will start with an open house at 6, followed by a presentation by project engineers and a question and comment period. The presentation starts at 7:30.
All four of the proposed sites are located in York, north of the current plaza. The current plaza, turnpike officials say, is located along a curve and near an interchange, making it difficult for drivers to see all available lanes and creating safety issues with merging drivers. The current plaza also cannot be expanded or upgraded to accommodate more advanced technology, like highway speed toll collection, according to turnpike officials.
Many residents living in neighborhoods abutting the four proposed sites have organized against the proposals, fearing their homes could be impacted or taken as a result of the project.
The turnpike authority expects to select one preferred site by May. Officials would then undergo extensive permitting processes for the project.
