Former Green Party gubernatorial candidate Pat LaMarche has been named spokeswoman of the campaign to put a casino in Oxford County.
Seth Carey, the Rumford lawyer and president of Evergreen Mountain Enterprises – the group backing the casino drive – announced the appointment this afternoon.
“I can’t think of a more articulate, compassionate and intelligent person to bring our message of hope and economic viability to the people of Maine,” Carey said in a written statement.
LaMarche, a former talk radio personality who left her job at WGAN after a highly-publicized drunken driving incident, made unsuccessful bids for governor in 2006 and 1998, and was the Green Party nominee for vice-president in 2004.
She has since written a book, “Left Out in America: The State of Homelessness in the United States,” on her experience touring homeless shelters during her vice-presidential run.
Voters will decide on Nov. 4 whether to allow construction of the casino in an as-of-yet unspecified Oxford County town. The referendum will be the state’s fourth on casino-style gambling and, if approved, would authorize slot machines, bazaar games, lotteries, and a number of games including blackjack, poker, dice, roulette, baccarat, money wheels and bingo.
