Richmond Selectmen to talk I-295 closure

By Kennebec Journal Staff report April 08, 2008 03:34 PM

RICHMOND — Selectmen meet Thursday to talk with the fire chief about a state proposal to shut down both southbound lanes of Interstate 295 for reconstruction this summer.

The proposal to shut down the southbound lanes between Gardiner and Topsham is expected to result in a major increase in traffic being diverted onto local roads through Richmond, especially on U.S. Route 201.

Selectmen are scheduled to discuss the Maine Department of Transportation proposed closure with Fire Chief Andy Pierce Thursday.

Selectmen meet Thursday at 7 p.m. in the conference room at the Richmond Town Office. Selectmen are also scheduled to:

• Appoint John McMullen as the new harbormaster.

• Discuss a grant to assist Hodgdon Yachts with business costs for its expansion into Richmond.

• Discuss hours of operation at the town’s holding station, which accepts wood, white goods and other items on Lincoln Street.

• Hear an update on the Waterfront Committee from Burt Batty, chairman of the selectmen.
