Consigli Construction Co., in collaboration with ttl-architects and Becker Engineering, will raise the bell at the Maine Irish Heritage Center at 34 Gray St., Portland, at 2 p.m. Friday.

The raising signifies efforts to restore the former St. Dominic’s Church.  The 1893 building was once used by Maine’s Irish immigrants as the home of one of the largest Irish Catholic congregations in New England.

In 2006, the tower’s bell frame broke through the belfry floor and collapsed through two floors of the tower.

Since then, volunteers have raised money for the restoration. The raising of the bell represents the ongoing effort to preserve the link this building provides to Maine’s past.
