BANGOR – The National Weather Service is using a new technological tool this spring to help monitor levels of the St. John River in the northern Maine town of Allagash.

The weather service has installed a webcam — a camera that posts images on the Internet — to monitor water river levels where a bridge crosses the river at Dickey Village.

Weather service hydrologist Mark Turner says the camera updates every 20 minutes to give Internet users a view of the movement of the river.

The National Weather Service is expecting widespread minor flooding in Aroostook County this spring, but all was quiet Thursday.
