AUGUSTA — Members of Peace Action Maine are planning an event aimed at lobbying legislators to vote against a bill presented by Gov. John Baldacci to have Maine drivers licenses meet federal requirements for identification.
The “Lobbying 101” session is planned at the Statehouse Welcome Center before the Transportation Committee’s scheduled 1 p.m. hearing on the bill in Statehouse room 126.
“Governor Baldacci has caved to pressure from the Dept. of Homeland Security. He has introduced a bill — LD 2309 — that will require Mainers to prove legal status in order to obtain a driver license. The bill is discriminatory, too expensive, and it just doesn't work. Don't let the Legislature and the Governor cave,” said Danny Muller of Peace Action Maine.
He also urged voters opposed to the legislation to contact their own lawmakers to express their opinions.
