AUGUSTA—Legislation approved by state lawmakers this week gives organic farms a measure of protection against accidental exposure to genetically engineered crops.
LD 1650 reduces the threat of copyright lawsuits filed by seed manufactures by eliminating liability for incidental contact.
And any lawsuits that are brought against farmers must be tried in Maine.
The rule also instructs the Department of Agriculture to develop best management practices for the use of genetically engineered crops.
The bill passed the Maine House of Representatives Tuesday and is expected to be signed into law by Gov. John Baldacci.
The new law comes on the heels of the town of Montville’s decision last month to enact a 10-year moratorium on the use of genetically engineered crops.
