York neighbors plan anti-turnpike toll rally

By Portland Press Herald Staff Report April 11, 2008 12:17 PM

A grassroots group opposed to the Maine Turnpike Authority's proposal to relocate the York toll plaza will hold a public awareness rally on April 20, which will begin at Eldredge Lumber and Hardware in York.

Over the past month, a number of residents in neighborhoods near the four remaining sites being considered for the new York toll plaza have come together to oppose the proposal. Think Again, a group formed out of the opposition, is organizing the rally.

Turnpike officials say the current plaza must be replaced, because it cannot accommodate new technology, it's on a curve and too close to an interchange, and it is sinking slowly because it was built on wetlands.

In February, the turnpike authority narrowed a list of potential sites down to four. All are in York, north of the current plaza, which is at mile marker 7.3, near the York interchange.

Some neighbors say they are concerned about their homes being taken. Others worry about an increase in noise or exhaust fumes from having a new plaza nearby, even if their homes are not displaced.

Depending on the site, the turnpike authority believes that one to eight homes could be displaced by the new plaza.

The rally on Sunday, April 20, will begin at 1 p.m. in the parking lot of the hardware store, 627 U.S. Route One.
