AUGUSTA — Members of the Inland Fisheries and Wildlife Committee today delayed a vote on a bill that proposes to raise hunting, fishing and trapping fees.
Because of busy schedules in the House and Senate, the committee was not able to meet. Instead, it is scheduled to vote on the bill Monday.
The bill, sponsored by Sen. Bruce Bryant, D-Dixfield, proposes to raise license and permit fees for residents by $2 and for nonresidents by $4. Bryant said the Legislature needs to plug an estimated $450,000 hole in the department budget.
At a public hearing Thursday, groups representing guides, trappers and bow hunters testified in support of the increase. But the Sportsman’s Alliance of Maine and the IF&W department testified against it.
Rep. Tom Saviello, a Wilton independent, also proposed creating a $20 annual fee for hikers, kayakers and others to help support the state’s search and rescue fund.
The committee is scheduled to meet at 1 p.m. Monday in room 206 of the Cross State Office Building.
