Late electric bills up 4 percent this year

By Portland Press Herald Staff Report April 15, 2008 12:25 PM

With the Maine Public Utilities Commission's winter restrictions on power shut-offs coming to an end today, a spokesman for Central Maine Power said the number of residents with seriously delinquent accounts is up 4 percent from last year.

There are 29,000 CMP customers whose accounts are at least 90 days overdue, according to CMP spokesman John Carroll.

Utilities cannot shut off customers' power from Nov. 15 to April 15 without contacting the PUC.

Carroll said the company will work with most of the customers who are overdue and they will not be immediately disconnected.
