Rep. Tom Allen and Sen. Susan Collins have raised a combined $9 million, making their Senate race the most expensive political campaign in Maine history.
Allen announced on Tuesday that he had raised $700,000 in the first quarter of 2008 giving him a total of $3.7 million. He has $2.7 million in cash-on-hand.
Collins raised $963,260 during the same period, from Jan. 1 to March 30, bringing her total to $5.52 million. She has $4.51 million in cash-on-hand.
Candidates for federal office were required on Tuesday to submit fundraising data for the first three months of this year to the Federal Election Commission.
The old state record for campaign spending was $8 million, set in 2002 when Collins won a second term by defeating Democrat Chellie Pingree.
