Handgun found near Oxford school

By The Associated Press wire report April 16, 2008 09:03 AM

Police say melting snow revealed a handgun that was found by a youngster outside Oxford Elementary School.

Police Chief Jon Tibbetts says his investigators quickly zeroed in on the nine-year-old boy who'd carried the gun to school previously.

There'd been a rumor several weeks ago that someone brought a gun to school. Tibbetts says the boy apparently became worried about getting into trouble and tossed the unloaded gun into the snowbank, where it remained until the snow melted this week.

Police say there'll be no charges against the 9-year-old because he's so young. Instead, Tibbetts anticipates there'll be counseling for the boy.
