USM students urge stricter gun laws

By Portland Press Herald Staff Report April 16, 2008 03:44 PM

About 20 students at the University of Southern Maine this afternoon staged a protest of U.S. gun laws on the first anniversary of the student shootings at Virginia Tech.

Students performed a "lie-in" in the quadrangle by the Luther Bonney building around noon.

The event was planned by media studies students at USM. One of them, Elisabeth Altshuler, said she was worried about another massacre happening again.

"Could I see it happen here?," Altshuler, 22, said. "Absolutely. I could see it happening anywhere."
