Flooding fears subside in southern Maine

By Portland Press Herald Staff Report April 29, 2008 11:57 AM

Southern Maine emergency management officials are keeping their eye on Maine rivers but the potential for flooding seems to be more of an issue in northern parts of the state.

The National Weather Service issued a flood watch for most of Maine for today as another day of rain combined with runoff from melting snow.

Cumberland County Emergency Management Director James Budway said officials are tracking water levels for the Presumpscot, Royal and Crooked rivers, but none appear ready to spill over their banks.

“The Presumpscot River is rising, but it looks like as you track it, it’s rising at a decreasing rate,” Budway said.

York County has had no reports of flooding and the skies appear to be clearing as rain moves northward.

“We have been very lucky down in this area,” said Joyce Kelley, a spokeswoman for the York County Emergency Management Agency. “Nobody had any problems and it looks like we may be all right.”

The Maine Emergency Management Agency will hold a conference call at 1 p.m. with county emergency officials to discuss flooding in different parts of the state.
