Teen forum to address needs

By Morning Sentinel Staff Report April 30, 2008 05:01 PM

SKOWHEGAN — Local teen-agers are hoping their peers turn out Saturday for a repeat performance of last year’s Community Action Forum.

Four teens helping to promote the project, are saying the forum — from 8:30 a.m. to noon at the Skowhegan Community Center — will give young people a voice. They also are advocating for more after school activities.

Nearly 300 adults and teens assembled for the first forum Jan. 13, 2007, in search of solutions to a spate of teenage crimes, including major vandalism to a trucking firm and an acid-bomb that was set off at Skowhegan Wal-Mart.

Deputy Police Chief Rick Bonneau, a forum organizer, said this week that the first forum was about assessing the concerns of the community and how to solve them.

“They had the hot topics of teen crime before them,” Bonneau said.

Since then, the committee — today called Teen and Community Issues and Assets — organized and began working on how to address teen issues in the area, including School Administrative District 54, comprised of Skowhegan, Cornville, Canaan, Mercer, and Smithfield.

One of the tangible outcomes was a formal survey of 356 eighth and 11th grade students in SAD 54 schools conducted by Minnesota-based Search Institute.

After introductions, led by teen Eric Axelman, forum participants will break into four sub-groups that will discuss and propose solutions for: Teen pregnancy, underage drinking, youth and adult partnerships and community resources, said Larrabee, a member of the Somerset County Association of Resource Providers.
