Local firm to buy 17 radio stations

By Portland Press Herald Staff Report May 01, 2008 12:15 PM

A newly formed Maine radio company – Blueberry Broadcasting – announced it will buy 17 radio stations in the Augusta, Rockland and Bangor areas from national media giant Clear Channel Communications.

The Kennebunkport-based radio company has signed a contract to buy all of Clear Channel’s Maine radio stations, said Bruce Biette, of Blueberry Broadcasting.

Biette said the purchase price is $11 million.

The stations being bought have formats that include talk, country, oldies and adult contemporary. The specific stations involved are: WABK, WCME, WFAU, WIGY, WKCG, WMCM, WQSS, WRKD, WTOS, WABI, WBFB, WFZK, WGUY, WKSQ, WLKE, WVOM and WWBX.

Biette, a Maine native, has worked at several radio stations, including some in Augusta. Blueberry Broadcasting’s president is Louis Vitali, who previously ran the WBACH network of classical music stations in Maine.

Biette said he expects Blueberry Broadcasting to take over the stations – pending approval from the Federal Communications Commission – in September.
