FARMINGTON – A Franklin County Superior Court justice on Monday ordered a Chesterville man to spend the next 18 months in prison for mugging a University of Maine at Famington student in December.
Caleb Hupper, 18, plead guilty to robbery and aggravated assault, both felonies, and was sentenced by Justice Michael Murphy to four years in state prison with all by 18 months suspended. He will be on probation for four years after his release with the conditions he stay away from the university and the victim, have no weapons, get counseling, and submit to random search and seizure for firearms, drugs and alcohol.
If he violates his probation, he will be ordered back to prison to serve the entire four-year sentence, Murphy told him.
The assault took place in front of the new Education Building at the corner of High and Lincoln streets at about 10:30 p.m.-- in full view of passing cars, the Mallett Residence Hall and pedestrians. The attacker took off and ran to a waiting car when a student ran over to help.
The victim received stitches for facial cuts and was treated for bruises and a mild concussion.
Hupper had been released from a Maine juvenile correctional facility the month before and was out on parole when the attack occured.
