Letter carriers stamp out hunger

By Kennebec Journal Staff report May 05, 2008 03:04 PM

Letter carriers on Saturday will participate in the world's largest, single-day food drive, collecting more than three-quarters of a billion pounds of food since its 1993 inception.

The Postal Service and the National Association of Letter Carriers partner on this campaign to stamp out hunger.

Last year, the drive delivered 70.7 million pounds of nonperishable items to local food organizations, the fourth consecutive year the total surpassed 70 million pounds.

Tom Rizzo, district communications coordinator for the US Postal Service in Portland, said Maine letter carriers last year collected 305,000 pounds of food.

“We urge our customers to keep the less fortunate in mind on Saturday and put out by their mailboxes some non-perishable items and help those who needs it the most,” Rizzo said.
