Arboretum to celebrate 'Bird Day'

AUGUSTA -- The Pine Tree State Arboretum will celebrate International Migratory Bird Day this Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon (rain or shine).

International Migratory Bird Day is celebrated in the U.S., Canada, Mexico and Central America. It was designated to help spread the awareness of birds and their conservation throughout the Western Hemisphere. The theme for this year's IMBD is "Tundra to Tropics: Connecting Birds, Habitats, and People."

Events will include bird walks led by members of the Augusta Bird Club; information on caring for and attracting birds to your backyard from the University of Maine Cooperative Extension; bluebird information and houses for sale; make-your-own recycled bird feeders for kids; temporary tattoos, stickers, bird posters from the Maine Dept. of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife; bird specimens on loan from the Maine State Museum; bird facts; a raffle for bird-themed Liberty Graphics t-shirts; hands-on activities with the Friends of the Cobbossee Watershed and many other activities.

Adult bird walk is at 8 a.m. The children's bird walk is at 10 a.m. Admission is free.
